About

My main research interests are in the fields of screenwriting theory and practice, adaptation studies, critical theory and authorship. My research primarily focuses on the relationships between texts, and examines the transformation of various media into film through the process of screenwriting.

My research scrutinises the shifting form, status and consumption of the film screenplay, particularly regarding theories of multiple authorship. I also examine the position of both the screenwriter and screenplay in the adaptation process, a neglected area of adaptation studies. This area of my research highlights the screenwriting process in the re-imagining of literature and other media; establishing the screenplay as a significant literary artefact that facilitates radical adaptations. My career as a screenwriter and script-editor for film production companies informs this approach to adaptation.

My research also interrogates received notions of authorship, engaging with auteur directors who are also prolific and transformative adaptors, including Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Derek Jarman, Akira Kurosawa, Lynne Ramsay and David Cronenberg. I am also concerned with the treatment of experimental and post-modern literature in film, including cinematic transformations of source material from authors such as J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs.

This research is informed by my work in the film industry, principally as a script editor and screenwriter. I have collaborated on film, television and radio projects with production companies and media groups such as Screen Yorkshire, Working Title, and the BBC. I have also had screenplays produced, including a short film as part of the Screen Yorkshire Caught Short sceheme.

I am a member and trustee of the Association of Adaptation Studies, and I serve on the steering committee for the Screenwriting Research Network. I am also a member of the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA), British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS), and Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.
